American H.S. : The dark side
We had “Jane’s English Seminar: Broaden Your World” at the World Plaza on Jan. 30. Ms. Jane Curtis, CIR of Saga Prefecture Government International Affairs Division, explained to us about American high school students’ dark side. The title was “American high school: The dark side.”
Teenage Pregnancy（思春期妊娠）
Birth Rates (Live Births) per 1,000 Females Aged 15-19 Years, by Race and Hispanic Ethnicity, 2000-2001
2011 Teenage Pregnancy Statistics
・329,797 babies born to women 15-19 (That’s 31.3 babies per 1,000 women)
・A record low for U.S. teens and drop of 8% from 2010
・Teens seem to be less sexually active, and more of those who are sexually active seem to be using birth control
Drug & Alcohol Abuse（薬物乱用）
Marijuana Past-Year Use vs. Perceived Risk among 12th Graders
Past Month Cigarette and Marijuana Use among 12th Graders, 1975 to 2012
Past –Year Use of Illicit Drugs and Pharmaceuticals among 12th Graders
2012 Teenage Drugs & Alcohol Abuse Statistics
・17% of 10th Graders (高1) & 23% of 12th Graders (高3) used Marijuana in the Past Month
・Over Half of U.S. Teens DO NOT Perceive Regular Marijuana Use as Harmful
・14.8% of 12th Graders Used a Prescription Drug Nonmedically in the Past Year
・Alcohol Use among Teens has Dropped to Historically Low Levels
School Violence（校内暴力）
The Columbine Massacre
There was a high school shooting at Columbine high school at Columbine, Colorado in April 20, 1999. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, 12th graders, murdered 12 students and 1 teacher, injured 21 students. The pair committed suicide.
Lockdown at Newport High School
A student brought a loaded gun to Newport High School at Bellevue, Washington in March 24, 2004. The school went into “LOCKDOWN.” The student held loaded gun to head. A teacher snatched it from behind. No one was injured or killed.
Bullying（いじめ）
2012 Bullying Statistics
・Every 30 min. a teenager attempts suicide due to bullying
・About 47 teens are bullied every 5min.
・Cyber bullying is on the rise
・The leading cause of death for children under age 14 is suicide
・About 1 out of every 10 students drops out of changes school because of repeated bullying
