German Cities – Hamburg –
We had “Jane’s English Seminar: Broaden Your World” at the World Plaza on July 9. Ms. Jane Curtis, CIR of Saga Prefecture Government International Affairs Division, explained to us about German City. The title was “German Cities – Hamburg –“

・The Beatles in Hamburg (ビートルズのハンブルク時代)

On August 16, 1960 a completely unknown band consisting of John Lennon (age 19), Paul McCartney (age 18), George Harrison (age 17), drummer Pete Best (18) and bass player Stuart Sutcliffe (age 20), arrived in Hamburg.

They called themselves the Beatles and were booked to play at the Indra Club the very next day. Six short weeks after starting at the Indra, they were playing at the Kaiserkeller. In November they wanted to play at the newly opened Top Ten Club.

In 1961, “The Beatles” returned to Hamburg and this time they went directly to the Top Ten Club where the longest engagement of their career followed. They played there for over three months.

The most crucial year! The Beatles signed a contract with their very first manager, Brian Epstein. They changed their look once again when they returned to Hamburg one last time to play at the Star Club - the first engagement they played with drummer Pete Best, the last two engagements they played with their new drummer - Ringo Starr.
