We had “Lunch time seminar in English” at the World Plaza on July 17. Hana-san, CIR of Saga Prefecture Government International Affairs Division, explained to us about Canada. The title was “Things we have learned about Canada over the past 3 years.” It was Hana-san's last time “Lunch time seminar in English.” We appreciate Hana-san's enormous contributions to our seminar for 3 years. Kick Off Summer in Vancouver
We had “Lunch time seminar in English” at the World Plaza on June 5. Hana-san, CIR of Saga Prefecture Government International Affairs Division, explained to us about “Kicking Off Summer in Vancouver Style.”

In 1904 Robert Butchart began producing cement from limestone near "Benvenuto" their home at the Tod Inlet, Brentwood Bay near Victoria BC. This is the setting for the spectacular Sunken Garden.

Victoria Day is a public holiday observed across Canada on the Monday before May 25th.
Victoria Day celebrates Queen Victoria's birthday (May 24th). Canada is still a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, of which the Queen is head.

The Richmond Night Market operated by Target Event Production Ltd was a popular annual night market held through the summer months in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada.
The Richmond Night Market was held on Friday, Saturday, Sunday nights and long weekend Mondays from May through October at the Vulcan Way location behind Home Depot until 2007.

The Canada–United States border, officially known as the International Boundary, is the longest international border in the world shared between the same pair of countries.

Maple syrup is a syrup usually made from the xylem sap of sugar maple, red maple, or black maple trees, although it can also be made from other maple species.
In cold climates, these trees store starch in their trunks and roots before the winter; the starch is then converted to sugar that rises in the sap in the spring. Maple trees can be tapped by boring holes into their trunks and collecting the exuded sap. The sap is processed by heating to evaporate much of the water, leaving the concentrated syrup.

Spring Festivals in BC
We had “Lunch time seminar in English” at the World Plaza on Apr. 17. Hana-san, CIR of Saga Prefecture Government International Affairs Division, explained to us about “Spring Festivals” in British Columbia, Canada.
We have the youngest participant in our seminar.
The Vancouver Sun Run has been Canada's largest 10K road race since its inception in 1985. The first run attracted 3,200 participants.
An incredible 49,365 registrants signed up for the 2011 Vancouver Sun Run with participants taking in the beautiful Vancouver scenery under sunny skies.
The Surrey Vaisakhi Parade has been held in the streets of the community for the past eleven years.
Attendees of all races and cultures are welcome at this celebratory and rich cultural event, which features a large number of floats, community performers and live music.
Surrey's Vaisakhi Parade also features a unique element which pays tribute to the harvest celebration roots of the parade – attendees are given free food and drink from hundreds of local residents and businesses.
Easter is a religious holiday that commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ after his death by crucifixion. For Christians, Easter is a day of religious services and family gatherings. Easter Day is a popular day for attending church, getting together for a big family meal, and staging an Easter egg hunt.
Spring in British Columbia brings out a wide range of flowers, none as popular as the Tulip. This beloved spring flower can be seen across the Lower Mainland but there is one location in the Province which provides one of the most spectacular tulip viewing: Seabird Island.
Since 2006, this Agassiz locale has hosted the annual Tulips of the Valley Festival which showcases thirty varieties of tulips spread over forty acres set against snow covered Mount Cheam.
Canada's cherry blossom festival the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival Society is a non-profit charitable society established in 2005 in the province of British Columbia.
The City of Vancouver declared March and April the months to honor the more than 37,000 ornamental cherry trees generously gifted from Japan in the 1930's.
As the quintessential symbol of spring, the universal theme of the cherry tree inspires new poetry, art, music, film, design, crafts, photography, and cuisine while inspiring the artist in us all.
Through a wide array of diverse programs from Cherry Jam Downtown, Haiku Invitational, Bike the Blossoms, Japan Fair, BC Blossom Watch Photo Contest, Cherry Scouts Program, Tree Talks and Walks and the Cherry Blossom Viewing Map the festival captures the exuberance of the blossoming with cultural programming for the whole community to enjoy.

Spring Break in BC
We had “Lunch time seminar in English” at the World Plaza on Mar. 27. Hana-san, CIR of Saga Prefecture Government International Affairs Division, explained to us about “Things to Do during Spring Break” in British Columbia, Canada.
Spring Skiing/Snowboarding continues on Blackcomb Mountain daily until May 28, 2012. Sightseeing is open daily on Blackcomb. Begin your journey up the mountain from the Wizard Express located at the base of Blackcomb Mountain.
The Sea to Sky Highway is the name given to a section of Highway 99, north of Vancouver. The Sea to Sky Highway is frequently rated up there as one of the most beautiful stretches of road in the world.
The Vancouver Aquarium is a self-supporting, non-profit society dedicated to effecting the conservation of aquatic life through display, communication, public programming and education, research and direct action.
Honeybee Centre is a commercial honey farm and visitor attraction located in the agricultural centre of Surrey, British Columbia.
Established in 1983, the Vancouver Police Historical Society is an independent non-profit organization and registered charity. An elected volunteer Board of Directors directs the museum’s operations.
The Burnaby Village Museum & Carousel is both a themed attraction and professional museum. It provides a visitor experience as well as acting as a heritage resource for Burnaby, the Lower Mainland and the Province of BC. It is a community museum with an outdoor collection and exhibit areas along with an archives, gift shop, gallery, collection storage and community meeting spaces.

The Capilano River originates near Capilano Mountain, 32 km upstream from the west end of Burrard Inlet. Capilano River Regional Park, North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada - just minutes from downtown Vancouver.
Capilano Salmon Hatchery was built below Cleveland Dam in order to rear and release the diminishing stock of both Coho Salmon and Steelhead Trout. The hatchery is an ideal environment for visitors to learn about the lifecycle of salmon. Over 400,000 visitors annually, both local and international, visit the public viewing area at the Capilano Hatchery.

Immigration to Canada
We had “Lunch time seminar in English” at the World Plaza on March 13. Hana-san, CIR of Saga Prefecture Government International Affairs Division, explained to us about “Immigration to Canada.”
After the initial period of British and French colonization, four major waves of immigration took place over a period of almost two centuries.
People in Britain and Ireland were encouraged to move to Canada after the War of 1812. Irish immigration to Canada had been increasing and peaked during the Irish Potato Famine. The Industrial Revolution forced many people to look to the New World for economic success.
The Klondike Gold Rush was a frenzy of immigration after the gold was discovered in the late 19th century near Dawson City in the Yukon Territory, Canada.
The federal government created an act called the Canada Citizenship Act in 1946. Canada still gave preferential treatment to white, European or American residents who wanted to immigrate to the country.
In 1967, Canada introduced a Points System that gave preference to immigrants who:
・know English or French
・not too old/too young to take regular jobs
・have a job offer in Canada
・have a relative or family member in Canada
・have proper education and training
・immigrating to a region of high employment
Canada began to receive more immigrants from Africa, the Caribbean, the Middle East and Asia. The vast majority of these immigrants settled in Canada's urban centers like Toronto, Montréal and Vancouver.
The Immigration Act was revised in 1976 by then Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.
The Immigration Act was created four new classes of immigrants who could come to Canada.

Closely related persons of Canadian residents living in Canada
・Economic immigrants
Skilled workers and business people
・Refugees
People who are escaping persecution, torture or cruel and unusual punishment
・Other
People accepted as immigrants for humanitarian or compassionate reasons
Temporary foreign worker with at least two years of full-time skilled work experience or a foreign student who graduated in Canada often applies to stay in Canada permanently.
Nowadays 19 % of Canada’s population is immigrants. The largest numbers of immigrants arriving in Canada currently come from China, India and the Philippines.

After the initial period of British and French colonization, four major waves of immigration took place over a period of almost two centuries.
People in Britain and Ireland were encouraged to move to Canada after the War of 1812. Irish immigration to Canada had been increasing and peaked during the Irish Potato Famine. The Industrial Revolution forced many people to look to the New World for economic success.
The Klondike Gold Rush was a frenzy of immigration after the gold was discovered in the late 19th century near Dawson City in the Yukon Territory, Canada.
The federal government created an act called the Canada Citizenship Act in 1946. Canada still gave preferential treatment to white, European or American residents who wanted to immigrate to the country.
In 1967, Canada introduced a Points System that gave preference to immigrants who:
・know English or French
・not too old/too young to take regular jobs
・have a job offer in Canada
・have a relative or family member in Canada
・have proper education and training
・immigrating to a region of high employment
Canada began to receive more immigrants from Africa, the Caribbean, the Middle East and Asia. The vast majority of these immigrants settled in Canada's urban centers like Toronto, Montréal and Vancouver.
The Immigration Act was revised in 1976 by then Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.
The Immigration Act was created four new classes of immigrants who could come to Canada.
・Family class
Closely related persons of Canadian residents living in Canada
・Economic immigrants
Skilled workers and business people
・Refugees
People who are escaping persecution, torture or cruel and unusual punishment
・Other
People accepted as immigrants for humanitarian or compassionate reasons
Temporary foreign worker with at least two years of full-time skilled work experience or a foreign student who graduated in Canada often applies to stay in Canada permanently.
Nowadays 19 % of Canada’s population is immigrants. The largest numbers of immigrants arriving in Canada currently come from China, India and the Philippines.

Valentine’s Day in Vancouver
Hi!
We had “Lunch time seminar in English” at the World Plaza on Feb. 14. Hana-san, CIR of Saga Prefecture Government International Affairs Division, explained to us about “Vancouver LunarFest” and “Interesting Ways to Spend Valentine’s Day in Vancouver.”
LunarFest was started in 2009 and built to be a Vancouver Winter Olympics Legacy event. The event is Canada's premier presenter of contemporary expression in Asian arts and culture.
It endeavors to reach new Canadians and those who have been here for many generations to share in the diversity of Canada.
It also encourages and fosters the collaboration of Canadian and International cultural presenters to create new forms of artistic expressions.
LunarFest is a festival that brings together Soul, Art and Life on one stage.
More than half a million people witnessed the magic of LunarFest and countless photographs were taken; it will forever be a part of the Olympic memories of many Canadians and visitors around the world.
LunarFest aims to collaborate with many Asian communities and outreaches to other Canadians.
This event is also built on an important artistic element for many cultures - the lanterns, through collaborations with professional artists and school children in Canada and around the world.
LunarFest is dedicated to protect the environment. Different from many Asian lantern festivals, all of the lanterns created for LunarFest are using only LED lights. In addition, LunarFest also incorporates an environment awareness campaign each year.

New Year's traditions
Hi!
We had “Lunch time seminar in English” at the World Plaza on Jnu. 17. Hana-san, CIR of Saga Prefecture Government International Affairs Division, introduced us to “New Year's traditions in Vancouver .”
The downtown fashion district is home to some of the best New Year’s Eve events in Vancouver with some amazing clubs hosting a variety of celebrations. There are also lots of other nightclubs and bars throughout the Vancouver area hosting a number of New Year’s Eve events for lots of options for all partygoers.
The public is invited to attend the annual City of Victoria New Year’s Day Levee at City Hall, hosted by members of Victoria City Council.
A Levee is a time-honored tradition that provides an opportunity for citizens and City representatives to exchange greetings and welcome in the New Year. The word levee is derived from the French verb "lever" which means to rise. French aristocrats used to receive guests in the morning after they had gotten up.

Happy Holidays in Vancouver
Hi!
We had “Lunch time seminar in English” at the World Plaza on Dec. 13. Hana-san, CIR of Saga Prefecture Government International Affairs Division, explained us about “Happy Holidays in Vancouver”.
Since 2003, Santa has ushered in the Christmas season by making his way through downtown Vancouver along with 60 bands, floats and community groups.
About 300,000 people come out to witness the jolly man's procession through the city.
The 2011 Rogers Vancouver Santa Claus parade is Sunday, December 4, 2011, at 1 pm.
The parade lasts about an hour and a half.
Eager parade watchers start staking their spots with chairs and blankets as early as 10:30 am.
Anyplace along the route will allow spectators a view of the parade; however, at the Vancouver Art Gallery and at Robson Square on Howe Street probably offer the best views of the parade.
Grouse Mountain, The Peak of Christmas
Open between December 1 – December 24. This is Famous ski/snowboard area.
Sleigh bells ring, choirs sing! Grouse Mountain presents a magical celebration and a multitude of festivities.
The Capilano Suspension Bridge is crossing the Capilano River in the District of North Vancouver. The current bridge is 136 meters long and 70 meters above the river. It is part of a private facility and draws over 800,000 visitors a year.

The City Museum is also decorated with so many lights.
Christmas Light Competition on the Trinity Street
13 years ago, two people living in this neighborhood died during home invasion. Community started this to remember them and retain the neighborhood.
Every year, Trinity Street in East Vancouver holds a Christmas light competition. People vote for their favorites, but there are no prizes for winners.
People buy ballots at a grocery store in this neighborhood and all of the money goes to charity.

Hi!
We had “Lunch time seminar in English” at the World Plaza on Nov. 15. Mr. Marcos Kengo Shinozaki gave us the information of the Brazilian culture, history and nature.
This time he introduced National Holiday (Declaration of Republic Day), Capoeira, Bahia State, Fernando de Ｎoronha Archipelago to us.
Nov. 15, 1889, Brazil declared itself free from Portugal by Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca and Emperor Pedro II was deposed. The monarchy in Brazil was abolished at that time.
The emperor palace was surrounded by Marshall Deodoro’s troop.
He introduced Capoeira, a traditional Afro-Brazilian martial art. Capoeira was originally Brazilian martial art, but it has now grown into a dance style all around the world.
This is Capoeira instruments. These are very simple.
This is historic Centre of Salvador City, the Capital of Bahia State in Brazil.
The name of "Bahia" is an archaic Portuguese word, meaning of "bay" in English.
This is Salvador City view from the boat.
This is Fernando de Noronha National Park that is located in the Atlantic See about 360km from mainland in Brazil.
Morro do Pico (321 meters), highest point of the island of Fernando de Noronha.
This is “Praia de Leao”in Portuguese, meaning of “Leao beach”in English.

Thanksgiving in Canada
Hi!
We had “Lunch time seminar in English" at the World Plaza today.
Hana-san explained us about the Thanksgiving in Canada.
American Thanksgiving was held in November 24, 2011.
On the other hand Canadian Thanksgiving was held in October 10, 2011.
Other than the date, there are not many differences between Canadian and American Thanksgiving.
Both celebrate with family gatherings, turkey dinner, events on the streets or at churches, etc.
Everyone was seeing interestingly and enjoying attending this seminar.
Thanksgiving dinner is incomplete without turkey.
And this is famous Turducken!!

Hello, this is Shira, an Indonesian and an intern from Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University.
こんにちは、インターン生のシラです。
Today, I would like to share the story of "Lunch Time Seminar" which was held on Tuesday, September 13th.
The theme of yesterday'ｓ seminar was "Canada" with Hana-san as the speaker.
９月１３日にあったランチタイムセミナーin Englishについて紹介します。
Hana-san explained about the beautiful place where she grew up which is Canada.
She was explaining about the "Green Movement" in Canada which focusing on Vancouver.
Moreover, she also explained about the ｓtreet food which became popular in Canada
美しいカナダで育ったハナさんはカナダにつぃて色々なことを説明してくださいました。
今回はバンクーバーでの自然保護活動やブームになっている食べ物の屋台について発表してくれました。
The seminar was very interesting because not only learning English in the seminar but also we can learn new knowledge as well as new culture of a country.
このセミナーで、英語の勉強だけではなく、新しい知識や文化なども勉強になり、楽しいと思います。

Today, I would like to share the story of "Lunch Time Seminar" which was held on Tuesday, September 13th.
The theme of yesterday'ｓ seminar was "Canada" with Hana-san as the speaker.
９月１３日にあったランチタイムセミナーin Englishについて紹介します。
Hana-san explained about the beautiful place where she grew up which is Canada.
She was explaining about the "Green Movement" in Canada which focusing on Vancouver.
Moreover, she also explained about the ｓtreet food which became popular in Canada
美しいカナダで育ったハナさんはカナダにつぃて色々なことを説明してくださいました。
今回はバンクーバーでの自然保護活動やブームになっている食べ物の屋台について発表してくれました。
The seminar was very interesting because not only learning English in the seminar but also we can learn new knowledge as well as new culture of a country.
このセミナーで、英語の勉強だけではなく、新しい知識や文化なども勉強になり、楽しいと思います。

Mr. Marcos Kengo Shinozaki is going to introduce us to the Brazilian culture, history, nature and love story on Sep. 6 and 20.
His story is absorbingly interesting.
Hana-san’s Lunch Time Seminar is scheduled to be held on September 13 and 27.
She introduces us to the Canadian culture, events and nature.

次回の「ランチタイムセミナー in English 」は、８月２３日にフランス人のジャン・ジャック・ポントンさんが、前回に引き続き、英語でフランスの文化やアフリカのことなどを紹介してくれます。
Mr. Marcos Kengo Shinozaki will also introduce “Brazil and Brazilian cultures” to us on August 30 and September 6. Various cultures are mixed together in Brazil. You can’t miss it!
